Border Cup

Orangefield 1st XI v Dunmurry YM

A home tie against fellow 1B amateur league side Dunmurry YM should have given Orangefield an excellent chance of progressing into the next round of the Border Cup.

But it was the away side that started the game with a buzz and caught Orangefield sleeping on several occasions in the first 20 minutes.

Dunmurry quickly went 1-0 up with a free kick that flew around the wrong side of the wall and into the corner of the net. Orangefield responded quickly and got one back almost immediately, but the kick the first goal should have given them didn’t hit hard enough and Dunmurry were able to capitalise on some poor marking and general poor play throughout the home side to hit back again.

The Orangefield players couldn’t string two passes together in the first half and, combined with poor marking and continually being on the back foot, easily let Dunmurry take control of the game and pick their spot in the goal.

Half-time: 1-5

The deserved ear bashing at half-time saw Orangefield go out with a slightly better attitude in the second half, but after an early goal didn’t materialize, the game died off and effectively ended as a contest. One goal for each team in the second half finished the game at 6-2 to the away team, and made for an embarrassing day all round for Orangefield Football Club.

Next weeks league fixture can’t come around soon enough and the players will need to put in a much improved performance to get their season back on track.

Full-time – 2-6
