Orangefield 1st XI v Newcastle

Orangefield went into the first home game of the season looking for 3 points which would put them joint top of the league after the fourth game of the season.

An impressive start to the game by Jonny Gibson and Dean Cousins created an opening for young Danny up front, but his snap shot went just wide. Orangefield kept the ball well and some more quick passing opened a space for Cousins to have a shot, but it flew just over the top of the crossbar.

At the back, Brian Reynolds was winning a tough aerial battle with the big Newcastle front man, with the rest of the defence looking solid also. But a quick throw in to the Newcastle forward who had dropped deep, saw him step inside and hit a great low shot bending into the bottom corner from 25 yards out, leaving Taylor in goals with no chance.

Orangefield again went forward looking for a goal, with a couple more efforts by Danny coming close.

Half-time: 0-1

The second half started much the same as the first ended, with the OOBs on the attack looking for the first home game of the season. Davy Tittensor was lively down the right hand side and used his pace well, getting some good balls into the box. Like the first half, plenty of half chances presented themselves but couldn't be converted. With about 80% possession, it looked like it was only a matter of time before the side drew level.

But with chance after chance going begging, long balls started getting punted into the Newcastle box, only for their defence to get in the way of most. With several more blocked shots and corners squandered, time was finally up and the whistle ended a frustrating game at Gibon Park for the home side.
