Rathfriland v Orangefield 1st XI

Orangefield traveled to Rathfriland looking to tie up another 3 points after an impressive win away to Ballynahinch midweek.

Good possession early on meant that Rathfriland caused little threat to the Orangefield goal in the first half. Orangefield were creating chances throughout the first half, but the home goal seemed to have luck on its side, with the ball going everywhere but the back of the net. It wasn’t until some good work on the left hand side created some space for Wilsy to fire the ball into the box to be met by Sam McNaul who coolly took the ball down, rounded the keeper and fired into the Rathfriland net.

Later on in the half another ball from the left hand side was struck well by Clarkey, but it rattled the wood work and bounced out for a by ball.

Half-time: 0-1

The away side started the second half where they left off at half-time, looking to create more opportunities to score. Chances again came through good running by Harvey up front and some neat play on the right and left flanks by Sam and D Tittensor, but the chances went begging due to a couple of good stops by the Rathfriland keeper and some off target shooting.

It took a mazy dribble from the left hand side by Dean Cousins to double the lead, after some more good play by Wilsy on the left hand side. Knocked inside for Dean, he took the ball 40 yards across the pitch before reversing a low drive into the far corner of the net. Not bad.

With Orangefield looking to push on and try and wrap the game up, Rathfriland started to push men forward. The OOBs looked to have contained the threat until a free kick into the away box saw a clash between the keeper Taylor and the Rathfriland forward. The ball carried on towards the open net and not even the quickest of defenders would have caught that one.

Orangefield could have perhaps had one or two more when Jonny Gibson came on as sub and played a couple of good balls in to the box, but again the finishing eluded Orangefield and the game ended with a win for the visitors.
