Community Cup 2009 - Saturday 13th June 2009
Once again teams from all over Ireland gathered at Cregagh Sports Club to participate in the third Orangefield OB Community Cup football competition. There were 5 different age groups this year, under 13, under 14, under 15, under 16 and under 18. All the age groups were closely contested with lots of good football on display to keep the good crowd entertained. With matches running simultaneously on two pitches it was a busy day for all.
Sponsorship from Spices Nice, Peace Fund, PSNI and Belfast City Council ensured that the day was a roaring success with all competitors receiving a medal and all players and officials being fed after the event finished.
The under 13 section was won by a very good Ballyclare team competing for the first time in the competition. They narrowly beat Ridgeway 3-2 in a final decider to take the title. Bangor Rangers finished third with Orangefield OB competing for the very first time as a team finished in fourth place.
The under 14 section was won by Bangor Rangers who beat Orangefield in a final play off for the title. Bryansburn Rangers were only beaten ito third place on goal difference. Unfortunately Ballinamallard weren't able to make it on the day due to transport difficulties but we hope to see them back next year.
The under 15 section was won on goal difference by Ulidia who outscored Oliver Plunkett to take the title. Orangefield OB finished in third place ahead of Lisburn Rangers.
In the under 16 section there were two winners on the day. Hawthorn won the league title with two good wins over Castleknock Celtic and Crumlin United, both from Dublin although the southern guys are almost a year younger as their age limits are different to the north. The other winners were Castleknock Celtic won won a play off between the top two teams in the league section.
In the one off challenge match for the under 18's Orangefield OB beat Ballymena United 4-1 to take the title.
Orangefield OB would like to thank all the teams who competed on the day especially our good friends from Dublin who made the long trip up to compete. Hopefully we will see you all next year again.
